Sam Alselwi: A Rising Leader in Liverpool’s Muslim Community
From time to time, we are eager to showcase young professionals in our community who are not only striving to better themselves but also embody a strong ethos to improve their communities.
Many exceptional young men and women in our city deserve recognition and should be highlighted to inspire the younger generation and serve as examples to their peers. Unfortunately, young people are often overlooked in our society or not taken seriously, yet the level of professionalism and creativity they bring is frequently underappreciated and underutilised.
This article is the first of what we hope will be many, where we introduce a young professional known for his discipline and hard work.
Meet Sam Alselwi, a young professional whose journey from the rural areas of Yemen to Toxteth, and from adversity to leadership, has made him a standout figure in Liverpool’s Muslim community. At only 22 years old, Sam is a graduate of Liverpool John Moores University, where he earned a first-class degree. Since arriving in the UK in 2013, Sam has transformed challenges into opportunities, becoming a mechanical design engineer, entrepreneur, and dedicated community leader. Recently accepted into the prestigious Young Muslim Leadership Programme at Oxford, Sam’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting those around him.

Starting as a student and then a volunteer at the Al-Ghazali Multicultural Centre, Sam has steadily risen to become a trustee. During his time at the Centre, he led multiple sports clubs and taught at the Arabic and Quran school. Recognising his talent and discipline, the Centre’s leadership made the commendable decision to appoint him as a trustee on their board. Now, Sam is using his engineering skills and professional experience to support the Centre’s £1.4 million renovation project, helping to transform it into a vibrant hub for youth and community activities. His leadership extends beyond overseeing construction; it’s about creating a space that embodies the values of unity, integration, and hope, ensuring Al-Ghazali serves as a cornerstone for the community, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose among all who use it.

In addition to his work with Al-Ghazali, Sam has been a driving force behind the Liverpool Muslim Society’s Roseberry Cohesion Centre project. This ambitious initiative is part of the Society’s Vision 2035, which seeks to establish the Liverpool Muslim Society as a leading force in community cohesion and integration. Sam’s contributions to this project include business development and strategic planning, helping to lay the groundwork for a centre that will serve the city’s Muslim population and the wider community alike.
Professionally, Sam is a mechanical design engineer with a passion for innovation. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his latest venture, an AI-driven meal prepping business aimed at personalising nutrition. This project reflects Sam’s forward-thinking approach, combining his engineering expertise with a desire to improve the quality of life for others.
Sam’s ability to balance his professional career with his deep commitment to community service makes him a role model for young people in Liverpool and beyond. His leadership is characterised by a focus on creating lasting, positive change, not just for himself but for the entire community. Sam’s recent acceptance into the Young Muslim Leadership Programme at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies further highlights his potential to inspire and lead.
When asked why he wants to join a leadership course and what motivates him to help charities with such significant projects, Sam Alselwi humbly responded:
“Every challenge I’ve faced is a test from Allah, a reminder of His guidance and mercy. My journey is not about seeking personal glory, but about serving my community with sincerity and humility. I aspire to lead by example, lifting others as we walk together on the path Allah has set before us. Insha’Allah, with His grace, we can build a future where we all thrive, united and strong.”

It is inspiring and uplifting to see young, talented individuals, and there are many others who are striving to better themselves in a world full of chaos and noise. In an environment where superficial role models like Andrew Tate and others on social media are often presented as guides, these figures are nothing but distractions, exploiting young people for financial gain.
Despite being very busy and focused on building his engineering career, Sam also dedicates time to supporting charities by developing modern and sustainable strategies for young people. In addition, he mentors a group of young individuals on a weekly basis, helping them stay focused on building their character and careers, away from the distractions of the streets or social media.
Sam Alselwi’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to the greater good. His story is one that many young people can look to for inspiration, showing that with perseverance and a clear vision, it is possible to overcome obstacles and make a meaningful impact. As he continues to grow and lead, Sam’s influence will undoubtedly extend far beyond Liverpool.
